The job of the illustrator is to create images that solve specific visual problems. The problem to be solved usually involves the support of an idea, which is presented in the form of text, or a product or service. Literal or narrative illustrations may be the appropriate solution for one problem; another may call for a more conceptual or metaphoric approach. Understanding the book, article, product, service, movie or other idea to be supported by the artwork, as well as an understanding of the eventual audience for the work, is crucial for the development of a successful image.
I will usually give an estimate after discussing the project, schedule and budget with the art director. Fees are based on usage; a picture created for a mass-market book cover will be more expensive than a similar image created for a small-circulation magazine. Schedule and complexity are also factors.
Once a schedule and budget are established, my process is something like this. I provide a preliminary drawing (generally scanned sent via e-mail) for approval. This drawing is like a blueprint for a building, it is much easier to identify and correct problems in the drawing stage than later in the finished art. If revisions are needed a revised drawing is submitted for approval.
I shoot my own reference photography as needed. Releases are obtained from all models. Once the drawing is approved I proceed to the final artwork, which is usually painted in fast-drying oil. Once completed I often shoot a digital photo for approval. Once the final painting is done and approved I can either ship the original artwork for the client to shoot and/or scan, or I can provide large format transparencies and/or high-resolution digital files which can be delivered either online or on a disk.
Digital technology has changed the way virtually everyone does their job today. I find that the technology works best for me as a tool for communication and for pre-visualization, as well as last-minute modifications when needed. Technology makes it possible for me to meet schedules that would have been very difficult in the past. In my case, I feel that the humanity conveyed by the hand drawn image is an irreplaceable aspect of quality illustration.
The works in the editorial, book, advertising and corporate sections of this site are examples of work commissioned by a variety of clients under a wide variety of conditions, deadlines and budgets. I do not create or sell stock illustration; rather I focus on creating specific custom solutions to specific needs. However, many of the images that I have created in the past are available for reuse. I will be happy to discuss your project with you and work with you to find the best solution for your individual needs.
